Fire on the Rim: A Firefighter's Season at the Grand Canyon
Published in Hardcover by Grove Press (April, 1989)
Average review score:

Probably the best book I've read on forest firefightingThis is a great book, written not from a journalistic point of view nor from an official point of view, but from that of somebody who was a fire boss for over a decade on the Grand Canyon's North Rim fire crew. Written as fiction, although it is based on actual events with only the names changed. Edward Abbey, who worked in a fire tower on the North Rim for a couple of seasons, makes a thinly-disguised cameo appearance here as "Abner". Effectively captures the work, the culture, and the humor of forest firefighters in a way that no other book I've read has. If you're at all interested in the subject I'd recommend picking this up.

Foghorn Outdoors Florida Camping (Foghorn Outdoors)
Published in Paperback by Avalon Travel Publishing (December, 2003)
Average review score:

Suits out of state visitors and native Floridians alike.Florida Camping is packed full of great directions, reviews, and a 1-10 rating system. It looks condensed, but what you get is factual, to the point, and complete. Whether you are an RV camper or a tent camper, you can find the perfect campground in this book. You'll need to mark the page or lose it forever, there are so many campgrounds listed! Included in the reviews are local trivia, like "a kid was nearly eaten by an alligator here", or "this is the only area that rare white squirrels frequent", to "there's a fantastic bar-b-q place just down the road". Thank you!

Foghorn Outdoors: Camper's Companion
Published in Paperback by Avalon Travel Publishing (April, 1996)
Average review score:

Best, most comprehensive "how-to" camping book in print. Why buy a library of books to learn how to get out of doors?
This wise and funny book with the drab title covers all
aspects of backpacking, camping, cycling, canoeing for
beginners and experts. The recipes are so much better than
any of the other so-called "outdoor cooking" books that
you'll jettison the others with the weekly garbage and
revel in such glorious challenges as this: "Baking a
chocolate cake while backpacking is like sex on Wednesday
afternoon: gratuitous but lots of fun." The chapter on the
Internet is the first of its kind anywhere for outdoor
types, and does it all in plain English. No cyberbabble
here. Star-gazing, equipment, and fishing guides, resources
and checklists, and, ta-da!, TEAR-OUT sections (recipes and
checklists) so you can actually burn this book and have it
too! These guys can write AND hike, cook AND eat, get
lost AND found, and even teach you how to lie in a hammock!
(It's an art: you could look it up!) The authors are
experts but never make you feel like a klutz. You end up
wishing they'd take you along, and that's the mark of a
terrific book.

Foghorn Outdoors: Day-Hiking California's National Parks
Published in Paperback by Avalon Travel Publishing (April, 1999)
Average review score:

This is the way to see the National Parks! If you're planning a visit to Yosemite, Sequoia, the Redwoods, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Lassen, or any of California's great national parks, and if you love to hike, this book is perfect. We spent a week in Yosemite last year, picking and choosing from this book's great trails. We did a long day-hike (8-12 miles) every day. Each one of the recommended trails was exactly as the author described. Without this book, we never could have decided which trails to hike in the park. We just came back from Death Valley and we used the book again. It's great! You really get your money's worth here.
